Antawn Jamison's Extra Effort Award Winners
For the second consecutive year, Antawn sponsored his Extra Effort Awards Program with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School system. The program benefited 25 students from each of the 14 Equity Plus Middle Schools in Charlotte. Principals from each of each school were asked to pick 25 students whom they felt worked the hardest to improve their grades, attendance and behavior throughout this past school year. The kids didn't have to make all As and Bs but had to display their dedication and give 110%.
"I simply wanted to tell these children to keep up the good work because there are people who are paying attention," says Antawn. "Sometimes middle school students are the kids who are the most forgotten. Everyone wants to volunteer at elementary schools and set up reward programs in high schools. Middle schools are the ones that get left out, especially these schools. I wanted to do something to change that!"
Last year, the Extra Effort Awards program rewarded about 200 students from six schools. A total of 350 students were rewarded this year.
"I just want to build on this program each year and make it bigger and bigger. My goal is to give students something to look forward to, something to inspire them to work harder," says Antawn.
Each school received either a Papa Johns' Pizza Party or Dunkin Donuts Party, all paid for by Antawn. Each student recieved a certificate and participated in a raffle in which a couple of students from each school won autographed pictures and bobblehead dolls from Antawn. The total cost of the program was over $1,000.
