Antawn Donates $20,000 to Family For House

Charlotte native and NBA superstar Antawn Jamison donated $20,000 on Wednesday, July 9, 2003 to help fund a Habitat-For-Humanity (Cabarrus County) House for a deserving mother and son near his hometown. It was brought to Jamison’s attention about two months ago that Suzette and Samuel Scott were desperately trying to raise money to have the second half of their Habitat home built. A typical Habitat home costs about $48,000 to erect, however the Scott’s home, which was dubbed “The Pastor’s House” because several different churches and individuals were involved in donating and building the structure, had only raised about $20,000. Builders had to stop working on the house numerous times because of lack of funds, which they attributed to the poor economy.

Jamison was immediately interested in donating half of the funds ($10,000) needed to finish the house while partnering with another corporation to donate the rest. After having no luck finding a corporate partner to join in his contribution, Jamison decided to fund the entire project himself.

“I just wanted to help a family out in their time of need. I don’t consider this contribution as a handout, I see it is a hand-up. We all need a little help sometimes, “ says Jamison.

Suzette Scott, 35, became involved in Habitat Cabarrus about 2 years ago, when her father suggested that she look into the homeownership program. She and her son, Samuel, 9, who has cerebral palsy and epilepsy, needed more space than their one-bedroom apartment provided.

Jamison's donation was part of his ongoing “A Better Tomorrow” community service campaign launched last November to implement service projects in Charlotte that encourage academic success and assist citizens who are less fortunate.
